My first invention.
Hello everyone,
Hi I want to tell a story of when I was quite young and living in McKenzie St Wonthaggi , over the road from us was our local dairy.
It was owned by the Hanley family
Chick and Sadie and they had lots of older kids as well ,
At the back of the dairy there was a big cool room where all the milk and the cream was kept.
Hanley‘s had the dairy as long as I can remember that used to deliver the milk by horse and cart back in the day all over the town , then later by red one ton Holden utes , and in the paddock next door there was the remains of two of the old horse junkets , where the day care centre is now,
back then Chick used to deliver milk all over town.
Well, whenever we needed milk or cream at home and everybody in the street instead of going to the shop to buy it we and our neighbours would go direct to the dairy which is also Hanley’s residential house across the road from ours.
Mum will give us the right money or close to to it and one of us would go over. Knock knock on Hanleys back door then with manners we asked for what we wanted , and then hand them over the money and they would get the goods for us out of the chiller , after awhile Chick or Sadie would just say just go and get your own Michael.
So I would venture out the back and open the door to the big chiller that was chock a block full of milk crates full of milk and cream , sometimes with yoghurt.
I’d get my milk and go out the front gate and close it and go home this was quite normal practice, for us kids to go and get the milk or cream whenever we needed it.
One day mum had been baking cakes and she let me lick the cream beaters and then spoon out what I could get out of the cream bottle. I actually really really liked it.
I thought it was really nice so one day when I went over to Handley dairy I thought to myself. hmm
I might just have a little bit of cream because you know that back in those days there was no safety seal on the bottles so I’ll take a cream bottle and flip off the red cap and take down a big mouthful or two mouthfuls of the cream.
Then I’d put the lid back on , and replace it in the crate , this practice went on for a long time , so then as a bonus ideal dairy made a new product and that was big M milks
I certainly had a few of them and I think at first the dairy management , were puzzled about the cream and they must have thought there was something wrong in the factory line , but in the end i guess they couldn’t work it out but they certainly came up with a solution ,
What was going on?
I went one day to get the milk and my total disappointment.
There was now a safety seal now on the cream so in one way I think I have helped invent the safety seal.
I think that reverted me taking a whole bottle of cream every now and then taking a full big M to drink fast on the way home and throw away the empty container in the big pampus grass in our front yard , but just like Dabba and the lollies , I think chick knew for sure but didn’t ever say anything.
So I was like the cat that licked the cream right up until they sealed it.
So I guess that I helped with an invention at the young age .
Hmm
Maybe it’s time to re invent a few things .
Cheers xxv
