Hello everyone,
I took a closer look at the Sarca 5 kg anchor.
On closer inspection there is a plate on the bottom of the anchor near the tip that has a cavity under it with a top and bottom hole for the water to drain out on retrieval.
So i had already been thinking of weighting the tip of it already as I thought it maybe a little light on and when i saw the drain holes I had a brainwave ,
and I thought that I will fill the cavity up with molten lead and make my anchor a bit heavier in the process.
I got out the gas ring and put my full lead pot on the top of it and I lit the fire up.
I thought that I had better plug the lower hole in the anchor to stop the hot lead from running out when i poured it in .
There was no need as it was crushed nearly shut in its construction .
Next i grabbed out my bathroom scales and I pre lead weighed the anchor and to be absolutely true to its name ,it weighed exactly 5kg ,
So then i popped the anchor on top of my lead pot on the fire to heat up the anchor mould as this will make the transfer of the molten lead a lot easier.
I actually heated up a lot more lead than i needed for the job as my lead pot was full last time I was finishing off making sinkers .
Eventually the lead was molten and ready .
I set the hot to touch anchor standing up in a suitable position and I pre heated the ladle in the hot pot of lead .
I started carefully pouring the lead in the hole and it was running out the bottom as fast as i was pouring it in
So i just hesitated,
This allowed the lead to set around the bottom hole and i had an instant seal .
I poured in slow and constant hot lead ,
about five ladlefuls,
Until the lead bubbled out of the top hole went everywhere,
and she was done .
I thought put it aside and grab a few sinker moulds while the lead is still hot ,
So i made a few sinkers for out the front , and also some small whiting ones .
So i grabbed a cold chisel from the shed and an engineering hammer and I knocked the lead dags off the anchor.
Now for the real test
On to the scales with the anchor and the Sarka is now a whopping 8.8 Kg
So im pretty pleased with that result and Tiger Ben should have absolutely no trouble picking in .
Just to tart it up a bit I gave it a quick coat of gloss black and I think it will look nice especially with the addition of a nice 7mt stainless chain .
Ill try and find the missing chain sock tomorrow ,
I have all the necessary shackles needed to assemble it all .
The Sarka has two different chain attachment points .
One is your normal joining point at the end of the anchor shaft.
The other point is at the front of the anchor ,
The idea is that the front pulling point will remove your stuck fast anchor,
by dragging the pick part of the anchor straight out .
My last anchor was similar but it ran a slot in the top of the anchor arm that ran the length of the complete arm .
This allows a run over pull out retrieval .
Hmm
The Sarca.
With its two fixed holes will also allow this type of retrieval.
I will show you how to set it up when I assemble it all and it will work for a similar anchor .
Cheers xxx
