Anchors away part three

Hello everyone,
Basically all that was needed to finish off the anchor rebuild was to attach a dedicated swivel at the anchor end of the chain and to join the two stainless steel chains together.

So firstly the chain that Blackie scored me was salvaged and not complete .
I thought in my mind when he told me that he had it  that it would be bright and shiny like polished stainless steel.
It was far from it and most of the  old chain was covered in paint and sealer and at first glance I was a bit disappointed as the chain was actually in three different pieces.

I picked out the two longest pieces and  I shackled them  temporarily together .
I then thought
Hmm

How do I clean this dirty old chain back up ?

I went into the shed as I have an electric  pedestal grinder with a wire brush wheel attached on one end .
So i grabbed the first link and i polished all of the grime off it with the machine.
I figured after that link was completed that to do the rest at this rate ill be still in the shed polishing this chain late next week,
So
Over to plan B

Plan B ,
I got my ute out and I attached  both the long and short chain to my towing safety hooks ,
I then took off down my stone road and I drove all the way to the end and then I turned around and I also dragged them back .

It would have bern a bit of a site as when i turned corners I could see the end of the long chain come out sideways in the most massive cloud of dust ever and it reminded me of  basically towing a  water skier on a rope with the dust  acting as the water spray a bit ,
and I had a laugh to myself.
No one saw me anyway .

When I got back hey presto not one bit of dirt or grime left on the chains and it left an abraided surface that will eventually smooth out over time  with the use of mother nature and the natural sand abrasion.

So i then took the swivel ,
It is an oversized swivel made for ten mm chain link.
So when  I placed the swivel on the anchor shackle point ,
It was really quite loose ,
It probably wouldn’t matter anyway but i figured a few ways to fix the problem.
One,
weld a washer each side of the hole to thicken it up.

I was reluctant to use this method as it’s a galvanised anchor and I don’t want to burn and break the original gal coating and promote rust.

So as the photos show you all the two hard plastic washers that i used in the swivel to take up its slack.

This is where I could kick myself because I thought that i had filmed the interesting and noisy joining together of the chain with a dedicated split hammer link ,
I thought i had turned the glasses on but later there was nothing recorded.

So i used a galvanised joining link because no one had a ss one in stock so I  thought I can change it over later as having dissimilar metals together isn’t a good idea especially in marine applications.
It can start corrosion or electrolysis,
and that can absolutely ruin a tinny .

So every single shackle and both of the swivel pins on the new anchor set up has been thread locked with a permatex liquid high strength thread  locker ,
And  they are all also torked up super tight,
so there is no chance of any accidental release.

I guess with all of this It wont probably stop me from cutting it off again someday.
I have a system i use where when I lower the anchor and turn off my engine ,
I then take out the ignition key and hang it up on a hook.

That day with Ben after drifting around till late afternoon i forgot to use my system.
Until then it worked well .

At least it hasn’t cost me an absolute fortune
Just a bigger swivel and a few shackles.
So it all has cost me about a hundred bucks and a lawn mowing .
A bit of time .
And the embarrassment.
But iI haven’t put on a chain sock  lat this stage as i have half a roll somewhere  hidden deep in my tidy workshop.

So the repairs to the port side seat and pockets is now complete and it has actually come up a treat and strong as .

The new spiffy Vhf antenna has been fitted .
While doing this job I accidentally cut the wrong wire instead of of the old antenna wire ,

Oops
So i have to fix that .
The stereo is playing up so i need to fix that .

I have glued on two stainless scuff plates on the top of the gunnels, as it was leaving marks in the paint with either of us sliding the gear in .

There is something else that isn’t to pleasing and when I did the  replacement of the boat floor and stringers i put down that  new eva foam type of floor as everyone was bragging to me about it .
It is self adhesive ,
line up the pattern and cut out your shape  ,
Peel off the backing and stick in place .

It cant actually be made for staying  permanently outside ,
Mine has bubbled up everywhere and it’s like it’s all now stretched out of shape and it looks like absolute crap .

I said to Ben that i think we need to go back to marine carpet ,
Stick whats there down with contact cement as best as we can and we can then carpet straight over the top and we use the new old eva as a nice soft spongy underlay.

More work lol
Those are the pleasures of owning any type of boat .

So I guess at the minute that’s about the updated report on Tiger Ben .

Cheers xxx
