Bill from Berrigan

Hello everyone ,
This is a story that explains my affinity with the aboriginal people.

The story starts a long time ago in a strange place and in even stranger circumstances , I met up with two young aboriginal men,  they welcomed me in and they  taught me how to traditionally dance, and in amongst it they gave me the gift of the  serpent and the snake, the serpent is the protector of the left side and is water activated and the snake is the right side always ready and lying in wait and they then showed me the bird as we soared in the clouds with beautiful soft feathers.
I spent one afternoon dancing and practising understanding of the dance with them.

A few years later, a friend of mine Michelle invited me away to a family members birthday in a place called Berrigan. This is somewhere I had never been before, so it was nice to go away with Michelle and her daughter Ryleigh
I drove Michelle‘s sporty Little Black Astra, with the windscreen wipers in the position of the blinkers, I must’ve indicated with the wipers 50 times on the way down.

We arrive at Berrigan and to the relatives house where the party was to be held that night.
It was only one street away from the main street, and Michelle being a keen as pool player , we decided that her and I would go to the Berrigan pub for a couple beers and a game of pool.
It was Saturday afternoonand there wasn’t that many people in the Pub. We started playing pool together and an aboriginal man came into the Pub and ordered a beer, as things go we end up Introducing ourselves.

His name is Bill and he was from Berrigan. So we played a bit of pool together all of us for the afternoon. He was a nice bloke and then we had to go back to the party so he said goodbye and we left.

A long time later, maybe at least 2 years later I came to a point in my life that decided to leave my hometown of Wonthaggi , and to venture up North to Cairns as I have a friend thst lives there and that I could live with him in his bungalow.
So I sold everything I had over a week in the biggest garage sale ever I think I raised 23k and I also fixed up a trailer to put my most valuable things in to take with me to Cairns.
When I was finally ready, I said goodbye to Wonthaggi and headed off on my crazy adventure to Cairns.

I had thought that I will be stopping along the way frequently and Fishing and just relaxing like most people do but that’s not what happened. I was pretty excited about the trip so I just kept driving hardly stopping along the way just like my dad in the truck and I think even Kenny got sick of the car trip .
I have another friend J that lived in Agnes Waters 1770 which was close to Cairns, so I drove to her place for dinner with her and her kids, after dinner I went to leave and out the front her road was made of stone and in the turning circle at the end of the court there was a massive pothole. I drove straight through the pole and the trailer bounce behind me and I heard of scraping noise as it hit the ground. I’ve got out to assess the damage to see the drawbar of the trailer severely bent with the trailer on an huge angle towards and scraping the ground.

It was pitch black dark and I could see the Pub just down the road with the street light in its car park , so I thought I’d go to there to try and fix my drawbar. I traveled so slowly down the hill and into the car park and then pulled up underneath the street light.
My car was so full of stuff. I had to unpack everything so I could to get to the jack and while I was mucking around something unusual happened.

I heard in a loud voice from the bushes at the side of the car park, hey Curly , what’s up brother?
A man appeared walking towards me with a massive smile ,
Do you remember me?
Im bill from Berrigan?
How are you doing?
I’m just on walkabout going to visit some family at the Tablelands and I’m going into the Pub for a bit of fun. Come with me if you want.
I was gobsmacked but I chatted to bill for five minutes and told him I won’t come into the Pub. I need to fix my car so that’s what I did.
I jacked it up under the drawbar and then I hit the drawbar with the back of my block splitter until I got it straight enough that it was towable.again,

So that was Bill from Berrigan.
I continue my journey on my way to Cairns.
I have a lot more stories to tell about when I get there and my association with the aboriginal community and how I built up a strong strong bond and a trust with them.
But I guess that’s another story itself ,
So far I have collected the serpent, the snake, the birds , now the challenge was how to actually win their trust.

To be continued.
