Hello everyone
Its almost lambing time again at the ranch and tis year there is a new weapon against our ild enemy Briar

Fox
Every season there are way too many newborn lambs fall victim to the sly old fox
So last week we took delivery of a pair of spayed Alpaccas
One is white and one is black
A bit like the odd couple
They were way down the back paddock out of site for the first week so i kept on looking for them but i couldn’t see them
When they were delivered the people said that they are quite friendly to humans but not to let Rex anywhere near them or there will be big trouble.
Apparently they are renowned for protecting sheep and lambs from foxes

And are quite efficient at the job
Hmm
Interesting

So the Ewes have bern brought up close to the sheds for lambing soon and when i looked up just before i saw that they were with that flock of sheep so i thought that id go over and meet them .
Straight away i see that they have bonded with the flock and were already acting protective when i approached the fence .
Rex was with me but he is not stupid and he just stayed right back in the yards like he already knows somehow that they are both dangerous to his health
What an interesting looking animal
They are like an oversized sheep with a giraffe sized neck thats holding their head on way up in the air
They sort of look quite strange especially if you are like me and have never seen one up close and personal before
Im not sure if you have to sheer them ,
but i would think so
The sheep on this farm are all self sheering and at certain times in the summer months the barbed wire on the fences around here actually turns thick and white ,
with old wool
It looks a bit more like rope than barbed wire , because its so full of old wool from the sheep rubbing themselves off on the fence
So the Alpacas looked inquisitively at me
Like what are you looking at ?
But then they just continued to graze happily with their girls and went on with their business
It will be interesting to see just how effective that they actually are this season where nature takes care of a ferrel pest
I always love

this time of year when i go outside and there are brand new cute as baby lambs that have entered the world in my backyard
Strangely enough there are usually just so many sets of twins born and the occasional triplets also
Its just a really special and beautiful time at the ranch
Cheers xxx
